01Overview

ROG Showdown came to the studio as a date and an ambition: a competitive gaming event that felt like it belonged on a national circuit rather than in a college hall. Everything else (what it looked like, how it was staged, how it was shot) was open.

02The challenge

Competitive gaming events in the region tend to be assembled from borrowed assets: a rented backdrop, a poster made the week before, a photographer briefed on the day. The result reads as improvised, and sponsors can tell.

The brief was to make one weekend look considered from every angle (the stage, the signage, the stream overlays, the social cut-downs) and to do it with one crew instead of five suppliers.

03Our approach

  1. An identity built for a stageA wordmark and type system designed to survive being blown up onto a backdrop, shrunk into a stream overlay and printed on a lanyard.
  2. A stage plan, not a backdropSet build, player positions, camera lines and audience flow drawn together so the room worked for players and for cameras.
  3. One crew on the groundThe people who designed the identity ran the print, shot the weekend and cut the content: nothing handed over mid-project.
  4. Content planned before the dayShot list, capture plan and edit templates locked in advance so the first clips were out while the event was still running.

04Execution

The build went in the night before. Through the tournament the crew shot stills and video continuously, feeding a rolling edit that turned around social cuts between matches. Print, signage and stage graphics were produced in-house, so late changes to brackets and schedules were reprinted rather than crossed out.

05Results

  • A single visual system carried across stage, print, stream and social
  • Same-day content published while the tournament was still running
  • A full library of stills and footage handed over after the event
  • A repeatable event kit the organisers can run again next season
